Austin Things to Do

Austin 6th street, a quick guide for first timers

Austin is not just a city of music., it’s the World capital of live music. Country music of course, but also rock or pop concerts and techno festivals. The city’s music scene covers all musical genres and is reflected in the wide variety of clubs all across the city.

Sixth Street, Austin’s party street

Known as the party hub in Central Texas, 6th street clubs offer a variety of musical events. In addition to the many bars of all styles, cinemas, art galleries or tattoo shops also have their place. The busiest part called Dirty 6th is more to the east… If you happen to go to 6th street, we have some favorites to share with you:

Midnight Cowboy

This is a speakeasy that has been talked about since it opened in 2012. Why? For before being a trendy bar, the Midnight Cowboy was a massage parlor, which was closed for prostitution by the Texas authorities. Converted since then to a speakeasy bar, you can sip nowadays on great classics (Martini, Whiskeys…) and amazing cocktails such as the famous “Alamagoozlum” which is based on rum, curacao and egg white. Attention, reservations required.

Casino El Camino

Of course, you’ll love the enormous burgers at Casino El Camino, made with prime meats and dripping cheese. Of course, you will also love the delicious fresh beers to go with. But what you will really love at Casino El Camino is its Jukebox, which offers dozens of songs in various directories, just in case you forget that you’re in a city where music is everywhere.

Esther’s Follies

Esther’s Follies is not a French Cancan room but rather a comedy club nestled on 6th Street. Actress Esther Williams, the founder of the club, wanted a unique venue with magic shows, vaudevilles, theater performances, skits and dance. In short, this is the place to go for entertainment in the evening, open every day of the week.

Easy Tiger

This is the “last” bar on 6th street, before landing on I-35. On the menu of the Easy Tiger, more than 30 local beers and homemade German specialties such as pretzels, special bread rolls and cookies. In the summer, the patio reopens and invites guests to ping-pong games.

Red River Street, the other corner that moves

Its real name is Red River Cultural Street, the neighborhood has a dozen nightclubs and many bars and rock clubs. If we had to choose, it would be:

Elysium

The trendy nightclub par excellence. From famous DJs to themed evenings, Elysium is defined as an alternative club in the Austin night scene. No dress code, the atmosphere is rather “electric”… and have fun!

Plush

Plush is a small bar in the neighborhood, a true pioneer of underground music, which regularly receives a variety of groups  (punks, Dub Step, Drum and Bass …).

And we were going to forget Downtown…

Kingdom

Delicious cocktails, a red dance floor, real light shows, one of the city’s best sound systems and talented DJs, welcome to Kingdom, the Kingdom of sound and light.

Barcelona

This is not the place to take your fiancée for a beautiful declaration of love, given the volume of music. But this does not seem to bother the regulars of Barcelona, who wiggle to the end of the night on current songs and acclaim famous DJ’s.
